Children who are overweight or obese are more likely to have lifelong health problems, as well as type 2 diabetes which is normally only seen in adults over the age of 40, but is now being diagnosed in children. Almost one in four adults are currently classed as obese, a significant rise from the turn of the last century (1999), when the proportion was one in five. But, this could rise to 13 million adults in England (one in three) being classed as obese by 2012, as estimated by a team of scientists from University College London (UCL) and being based on current trends - almost half of them coming from low income or disadvantaged communities, the researchers have further warned. Furthermore, recent studies have also shown that depression is especially common among obese teens, who are often subjected to shame and social isolation by their peers. Many obese teens also become depressed due to the intense media exposure most of them are subjected to. This in turn, causes them to have distorted self-images and unrealistic expectations of their bodies.
